Minister's Visit

Malcolm Smith being interviewedPensions Minister Mr Malcolm Wicks MP visited Ashton-under-Lyne's new archive building at Tameside Central Library. He came to meet staff from Tameside Council's joint team with the Pension Service. Mr Wicks also took part in an interview. In which he said "I’m committed to the fact that we’ve got to join up services and benefits across Britain for the benefit of older people."

"From Tameside we’ve seen joint working in practice. I’ve met members of the Tameside team and I’m encouraged by their skills and work they’re doing for the benefit of older people. " He went on to state:

"I think what we’ve got is to make sure we learn from good practice although Tameside is in the lead on this, we want more local authorities to develop this kind of approach in the months to come. I think we’ve got to find ways of making sure people can learn from what you’re doing here in Tameside so that people are not reinventing the wheel all the time.”

Mr Wicks also launched the OWL website, which is dedicated to providing quality information for older people.

Mr Wicks said "I think the website is an excellent way of bringing service provision and benefits to older people in Tameside. I go away back to London, Whitehall and the House of Commons, very, very encouraged by what I have seen here in Tameside."

"I think the website is another example of that joined up approach, because many older people are interested in IT, or they are learning it for the first time. If they can’t operate it themselves then they've probably got a grandchild or a neighbour that can."

Mr Wicks also met staff from the teams and Cllr Margaret Oldham and Janet Callender, Chief Executive. He also heard first hand about the work from community leader Dipak Chauhan who represents Tameside and the North West on the UK Older People's Advisory Group and Elsie Dixon, an active community volunteer in Hattersley.

Councillor Margaret Oldham, Executive Member for Co-ordination services said:  "We are delighted that Mr Wicks visited us to hear about our successful work with older people. Tameside is leading the way in this work and we are pleased that he is encouraging others to learn from us."

Really Important Quesitons (RIQ) 5th Conference Report

The 5th “Really Important Questions” Annual Conference was held at the Alder Community High School, Hyde on Wednesday 27th October 2004.

Conference Chair Bob Heald with Colin McKinless, Executive Director of Social Care and Health and Senior Managers From Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust, Tameside and Glossop Acute Services NHS Trust and Pennine Care NHS Trust

The main aim of the day was for Senior Managers from health and social care services in Tameside and the older people in the community to examine what had been achieved as a result of the focus on older people’s issues at previous conferences. The conference’s other objectives were to look at how services have changed locally and address how health and social care services have been responding to the messages from older people about the type of services that are important to them and the way they are delivered.

Councillor John Taylor, Tameside MBC Cabinet Deputy for Social Care and Health, opened the conference and encouraged delegates to take the opportunity to voice their views and thereby contribute to the planning of services.
