Consumer Rights / Trading Standards
If you buy anything from a shop, catalogue or even the internet and there's something wrong with it, then you've got a right to do something about it, subject to a few terms and conditions. It is these 'terms and conditions' that can be confusing. The BBC's consumer rights website is a great resource full of great advice.
Likewise the Trading Standards website holds information and advice on what to do if things go wrong and what you rights are, and how to complain. It is also the place to report rogue traders. The site has a great page with lots of leaflets about various areas of consumer rights.
Shopping on the Internet
Shopping on the Internet can be a convenient and cost-effective way of purchasing goods. For people who have difficulty getting about because of their disability, it might be an ideal way to shop.
Internet shopping is sometimes called e-shopping or e-commerce. If you shop using the Internet, you have the same consumer rights as if you had shopped at a store in your local high street. The Department for Trade and Industry states that your rights or protection includes:
- The right to receive clear information about goods and services before deciding to buy
- Confirmation of this information in writing
- A cooling off period of seven working days in which the consumer can withdraw from the contract
- Protection from credit card fraud
Have a look at the Government's 'Consumer Gateway' Here you can read about:
- Key safe shopping tips
- Buying from abroad
- Safe payment
- Data protection and unwanted email
- If problems arise
