Improve your English - learning courses - (for people whose second language is English)
Tameside Adult Learning has several courses for people whose second language is English. Have a look at:
Tameside College also run ESOL courses. They can help with completing CVs and have available interpersonal skills workshops.
Conversation English
This is a 15-week/2 hours per week course based at St. Ann's Learning Centre, Burlington St, Ashton-under-Lyne on Friday 9.00am-11.00am.
Main objectives:
- To practise listening skills and to join in conversation about a wide range of topics.
- To increase learners
- To establish and meet learner's personal goals in spoken English

ELLIS
If English is not your first language - but you'd like to speak and understand it better - Learndirect can help you.
ELLIS (English language Learning Information System) is an excellent way of learning English. This FREE computer-based course uses video clips showing everyday situations to help you learn, such as:
- Finding somewhere to live
- Going to job interviews
- Meeting people
- Shopping
- Visiting the doctor
You can practise speaking English by recording your own voice and listen to words and phrases as often as you like. You can also learn about grammar.
There are two levels:
- ELLIS Introduction for beginners
- ELLIS Middle Mastery for those more advanced
An English skills check is made to see which level is best suited to you.
And there's help available in all these languages, so you don't need to worry about not being able to understand what's being said:

This is a 30-week/2 hours per week course based at St Ann's Learning Centre, Burlington Street, Ashton-under-Lyne.
Main objectives:
- To build confidence in written and spoken communication
- To build confidence in knowledge of Britain e.g. consumerism, family, law, environment
- To build vocabulary
- To build on personal life experience
- To enable discussion, debate, opinion opportunities
